With the fairgrounds headed west, I wanted to take advantage of the good weather and see what's new (or not so new). My 2008 State Fair top ten:
10. Wi-Fi. Who says our State Fair isn't high tech?
9. Personality Handwriting Analysis. The Televac 62000, a “computer” with 400 flashing lights was high tech at the State Fair 40 years ago -- I'm not sure what it is today.
8. Dockdogs. I enjoyed this as much as the dogs seemed to enjoy it.
7. The Gooseman. Or is it gaggle watchman?
6. Old tractors. What guy doesn’t like horsepower?
5. Farm animals. Being a city kid I enjoy seeing a pig, or two.
4. Chainsaw art. It looks like hard, dirty work, but also something of a sport.
3. Photography. Over 2,000 exhibits this year.
2. Sand Carvings. The sand sculptors are from Daytona Beach, FL (surprise!).
1. The Food. If you want something on a stick this is the place to be. I like the variety at Lolo’s or try a polish dog (with onions and peppers) from Hardenbrook’s. There's a new one this year -- a hot beef sundae. (It's like Sunday dinner in a bowl. What's not to like?)
